PIT.24.I

$2,800.00

Like its companions in the ARKHE OBJECT PIT firing collection, this piece emerged in a spontaneous descent – a slab of clay transformed by gravity's gentle command. Its surface holds dual histories: first, the textural memory of a studio mate's fabric pressed into clay, a testament to the interconnected nature of creative space. Then, through the ancient alchemy of pit firing at The Oki Doki Studio, a celestial story emerged: deep smokey blacks give way to sparkling constellations, where the natural ivory of the clay creates moments of light and breath. Between these realms, a speckled transition zone appears like a galaxy born of fire and earth, while tender whispers of grey trace the center and rusty reds accent the cosmic landscape. This interplay of texture and tone was achieved through careful placement of seaweed, banana skins, foraged leaves, salt, kelp, copper, and iron in the pit firing process.

Mounted on a hand-welded backing crafted by Taylor Forrest Studios in New York's Hudson Valley, the piece is completed by custom metalwork oxidized to a deep gunmetal black. The sculpture is illuminated by dimmable LED lighting, offering control over its luminous presence, and can be configured for either hardwire installation or plug-in convenience. When lit, PIT.24.I reveals the marriage of intentional mark-making and elemental chance – a collaboration between human touch, community, and fire's transformative journey.
